On a whim, she agrees to write a play for a theatre producer with hopes that it will distract her from the thought of her only son who is in service in the War overseas. But a long-hidden secret in the form of a letter from her errant father, discovered under the floorboards at Green Gables provides a distraction of its own. As Anne begins to delve into long-buried memories, reliving the troubled years before she arrived at the Green Gables farmhouse, she is forced to confront the stories made up about her life to cope with her mother’s death and her father’s abandonment. As a child, young Anne was taken into the care of a wealthy matriarch, Amelia Thomas (Shirley MacLaine), and her daughter-in-law, Louisa (Rachel Blanchard), which changed her life forever. “Mrs. Rachel rapped smartly at the kitchen door and stepped in when bidden to do so. The kitchen at Green Gables was a cheerful apartment—or would have been cheerful if it had not been so painfully clean as to give it something of the appearance of an unused parlor. Its windows looked east and west; through the west one, looking out on the back yard, came a flood of mellow June sunlight; but the east one, whence you got a glimpse of the bloom white cherry-trees in the left orchard and nodding, slender birches down in the hollow by the brook, was greened over by a tangle of vines. Here sat Marilla Cuthbert, when she sat at all, always slightly distrustful of sunshine, which seemed to her too dancing and irresponsible a thing for a world which was meant to be taken seriously; and here she sat now, knitting, and the table behind her was laid for supper.”“Anne of Green Gables” by Lucy Maud Montgomery was first published in 1908. “But you have such dimples,” said Anne, smiling affectionately into the pretty, vivacious face so near her own. “Lovely dimples, like little dents in cream. I have given up all hope of dimples. My dimple-dream will never come true, but so many of my dreams have that I mustn’t complain. Am I all ready now?” – L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Right, again this is a shameless re-read treat but, you know what? It’s Valentines Day and Gilbert Blythe was one of my first literary crushes, so, allow me to indulge.
Anne of Green Gables was possibly the closest literary heroine I came to looking like or being like. She had red hair, check, was away with the fairies always imagining things, check, liked school and learning, check, and got teased for having red hair, check. She also smashed a slate over the boy who dared to address her as ‘carrots’ (this is Gilbert Blythe by the way, cheeky rascal). I talked about this slate-smashing for weeks after reading it when I was much younger – I was so proud of her.
I raced through this book, but not necessarily because it was easy to read, mostly because I found certain chapters a bit slow (sorry L.M) and decided to skip some. One thing that struck me whilst I pottered through the twee but very sweet stories about Anne’s childhood is how religious it is? I never noticed this when I was younger – boy is it preachy and pious at points. I just felt shocked because it was a huge element to LM’s writing style and yet it totally passed me by when I read it as a child.
So for those of you who don’t know Anne – who is she, and what is this book about? Well, Anne is an orphan, she has had a pretty traumatic past and arrives looking for love and a family in the Canadian rural community on Prince Edward Island. As you can imagine, beautiful descriptive scenery – you just want to live there. She arrives, with a battered old carpet bag and her freckles and her red hair and waits for Matthew Cuthbert to collect her. Matthew arrives, but it becomes apparent that he and his aging sister Marilla specified that they required an orphan boy, not a girl, as they run a large farm. Anne (spelled with an ‘e’) being Anne, charms Matthew on their ride home and he cannot bring himself to tell her the mistake. Marilla is harsher but very quickly softens, and the Cuthberts adopt her.
And so, she lives a charmed childhood with her best friend and kindred spirit Diana. She gobbles books and runs about the wilderness collecting flowers and imagining all sorts of wonderful things. This in the introductory book into her womanhood – her keen intelligence does not go unnoticed and she begins to dream of university, a dream that was quite impressive considering the era for a woman.
So there you have it – that’s Anne. It’s kind of like a Canadian Darling Buds of May but with a really charismatic feminist hero. Netflix recently adapted part of the story into a new original series, called ‘Anne with an E’. I gave it a watch a while back when I had the flu and thought it was a really good interpretation and it really capitalised on the beauty of the place.

House of Dreams: The Life of L. M. Montgomery by Liz Rosenberg
An affecting biography of the author of Anne of Green Gables is the first for young readers to include revelations about her last days and to encompass the complexity of a brilliant and sometimes troubled life.
Once upon a time, there was a girl named Maud who adored stories. When she was fourteen years old, Maud wrote in her journal, “I love books. I hope when I grow up to be able to have lots of them.” Not only did Maud grow up to own lots of books, she wrote twenty-four of them herself as L. M. Montgomery, the world-renowned author of Anne of Green Gables. For many years, not a great deal was known about Maud’s personal life. Her childhood was spent with strict, undemonstrative grandparents, and her reflections on writing, her lifelong struggles with anxiety and depression, her “year of mad passion,” and her difficult married life remained locked away, buried deep within her unpublished personal journals. Through this revealing and deeply moving biography, kindred spirits of all ages who, like Maud, never gave up “the substance of things hoped for” will be captivated anew by the words of this remarkable woman.
For TeensMaud: A Novel Inspired by the Life of L. M. Montgomery by Melanie J. Fishbane
Fourteen-year-old Lucy Maud Montgomery—Maud to her friends—has a dream: to go to college and, just like her idol, Louisa May Alcott, become a writer. But living with her grandparents on Prince Edward Island, she worries that this dream will never come true. Her grandfather has strong opinions about a woman’s place in the world, and they do not include spending good money on college. Luckily, she has a teacher to believe in her, and good friends to support her, including Nate, the Baptist minister’s stepson and the smartest boy in the class. If only he weren’t a Baptist; her Presbyterian grandparents would never approve. Then again, Maud isn’t sure she wants to settle down with a boy—her dreams of being a writer are much more important.
Life changes for Maud when she goes out West to live with her father and his new wife and daughter. Her new home offers her another chance at love, as well as attending school, but tensions increase as Maud discovers her stepmother’s plans for her, which threaten Maud’s future—and her happiness—forever.
